TOP PLACES TO EAT VEGAN IN HULL, UK

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Hull is a city that is really close to both of our hearts. Mike was born in Hull, and Kyra studied at the University there and worked there for many years.

In 2017 Hull was UK City of Culture - the city is full of memories and the legacy of this title with lots of events and festivals - including Freedom Festival, the city's award winning international arts festival - filling up the calendar.

Hull has also been voted one of the best places for vegan food in the UK - most cafes and restaurants offer vegan options, but there are so many places that are exclusively plant-based you'll be spoilt for choice!

There are so many places we could talk about, but here are some of our favourites:

1st: Trinity Market

Lowgate, Hull, HU1 2JH, UK

Trinity Market has to come top of our list because of the amazing range of food on offer. No matter what cuisine you have in mind, you're sure to find it at the market - which is located in a really beautiful part of Hull's old town. Best of all, the market host frequent events, including frequent live music evenings showcasing the best local talent.

Made up of friendly independent businesses, most of the stalls have vegan options, with options from around the world. Particular favourites of ours are Only (a vegan stall which has some of the best plant-based mac and cheese I've tasted in the UK, and really popular slices of pizza), Cinnamon (a vegan and vegetarian bakery), and Falafia (a falafel stall with plant-based cheese, chick*n and garlic aioli to make your wrap or salad box really special!)

2nd: Blondes Cruelty Free Eatery

106 King St, Cottingham, Hull, HU16 5QE, UK

Outside of the city centre and within the beautiful area of Cottingham, Blondes is nestled within a leafy suburb. The cafe is famous within Hull for being the original and best vegan cafe, but within Cottingham it is super popular for the quality and taste of its entirely plant-based menu food - among vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and carnivores alike.

Blondes have a delicious menu of sandwiches, breakfasts, burgers and rotating hot meals, as well as an incredible deli counter packed with freshly make cakes and bakes, pies and pastries. They are also a one-stop-shop for vegan food, pantry and household goods - and they're dog friendly too!

3rd: Hitchcock's

1 Bishop Ln, Hull, HU1 1PA, UK

It's hard to truly understand the magic of Hitchcock's without experiencing it for yourself. Deep within Hull's Old Town, Hitchcock's is a vegetarian restaurant that has developed a strong reputation within the city for a night like no other.

Within the ramshackle historic building filled with mysteries and curios, Hitchcock's offers two sittings per evening, and opens only when enough people have booked a table. But don't let that put you off - the restaurant is so popular that I've never had my booking turned away because they're not open but occasionally they have been fully booked!

The first person to book a table for the evening gets to choose the cuisine - from Mexican to Japanese, from Sri Lankan to Italian, Hitchcock's do it all. Your starters are served to your table, then you help yourself to all you can eat mains and desserts from the buffet. Everything here is vegetarian, with plentiful vegan options labelled alongside allergens. With tea or coffee after your meal included, three courses come to £25 per head - with a magical experience included.

4th: Barleys

216 Newland Ave, Hull, HU5 2ND, UK

Tucked into the vibrant student and creative area of Newland Avenue, Barleys is a daytime vegan delicatessen where everything is plant-based and everything is delicious.

From sandwiches and cakes, to burritos and salads, Barleys offer a rotating menu of lunchtime treats as well as pantry and household staples. We've grabbed lunch at Barleys many times, and find it hard to stray from their vegan egg sandwich, which contains the best plant-based egg mayonnaise we've discovered anywhere in the world (a bold claim, we know, but an entirely justified one!)

5th: Sumo Pan Asian

Via Francesco Maurolico, 15, 90127 Palermo PA, Italy

Slightly outside of Hull, in the neighbouring towns of Hessle and Beverley, Sumo specialises in delicious cuisine from across Asia.

With plentiful plant-based alternatives - including their famous vegan bento box - Sumo has options to tempt people with all dietary preferences. Their tofu dishes are some of the tastiest in the area, well worth the easy journey out of the city!

6th: Junk Soul Smothered

Keep an eye out for their pop up locations

Junk Soul Smothered are a pop up that has rightly developed a big name for itself in Hull and East Yorkshire. Their eye-catching pink and blue burger buns are filled with vegan chick'n or hamburgers, plant-based cheese and delicious sauces.

They offer fries or their famous maple-bacon scoffles on the side - bring your appetite because you're going to want to try both!

7th: Long An

Paragon Square, 2-4 Paragon St, Hull, HU1 3QT, UK

If you're looking for somewhere for a date night or special occasion this Vietnamese restaurant has you covered, regardless of your dietary requirements.

Long An has a full plant-based menu that supplements their regular menu, with vegan versions of almost all of their most popular dishes, desserts and cocktails.

It can be a little on the pricey side, but Long An's food is really worth it and the presentation is truly beautiful. One of our favourites is their tofu fried rice, served in a hollowed-out pineapple!

8th: Hessle Kitchen

Walrus Arcade, Prestongate, Hessle, HU13 0BZ, UK

We stumbled across Hessle Kitchen while looking for a plant-based cooked breakfast one Saturday morning. We were surprised to find this little cafe tucked away behind the main street, with a menu brimming with vegan delights. The breakfast that we had was incredible, with the delicious surprise of a vegan fried egg! The prices were really reasonable, and for a small amount extra we bought two enormous slabs of vegan chocolate cake to take away.
